Congratulations to the following students for being selected as Artist of the Month. All the teachers and staff members in the school recognized and selected these students based on their creativity, craftsmanship, and hard work in their artwork. Congratulations, Rebel, Waylan, and Ryleigh.

7th-grade students Ruthie Coulter and Emma Young are shown here, pointing out a graph made in Google Sheets from data generated in the Egg Osmosis Lab. Students prepare data tables and graphs in Google Sheets to insert into their lab reports.
All the lab groups did a great job with the lab. The results from the lab were perfect!

The Chilhowee R-IV School District would like to welcome Ms. Sierra Wilkens, our new secretary/paraprofessional. Sierra has been a member of our school community as a parent for several years. We are excited to have her join our staff. Please join us in welcoming her to our Chilhowee family!

The 7th-grade students were back in the lab after winter break to study how water moves in and out of eggs through the egg membrane.
The egg shells were first dissolved in vinegar (acetic acid) and then placed in different solutions (distilled water, 34.2% sucrose, and 68.4% sucrose) after weighing them with a digital scale. This membrane is selectively permeable. This means that it lets some molecules move through it and blocks out other molecules. Water moves through the membrane easily. Bigger molecules, like the sugar molecules in the sucrose solutions, do not pass through the membrane.
The eggs were then weighed again to see if they gained or lost mass as a result of water moving into or out of the egg. The students then calculated the % change in mass and graphed their data in Google Sheets.

Do you know a young person in grades 8 – 11 who wants to make a difference in their community?
Beginning January 7, 2025 through March 3, 2025, teens with a passion for preparedness can apply to join FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council.
FEMA created the Youth Preparedness Council in 2012 to bring together youth leaders from across the country who are passionate about emergency preparedness and making a difference in their communities.
The YPC provides young people with an opportunity to learn about emergency management, develop professional skills, and share their perspectives with FEMA staff. The YPC is a concrete example of FEMA’s commitment to involving America’s youth in preparedness-related activities.
Save the dates! FEMA will host two webinars for potential applicants to learn more about the YPC and the opportunity to ask FEMA staff questions about the application process.
Potential applicants can learn more by attending one of these upcoming information sessions:
